Making Social Media Fun Again!

Does your newsfeed make you smile?

It’s easy for your social media feed to get caught up in all the chaos that is life. Lots of days what we see on our social media accounts can lift us up or bring us down.

This month at Molly Knuth Media, we’ve been working on our January Joyful Social Challenge by focusing on the positives in our lives and businesses through a variety of methods, one of the most essential being cleaning up our social media pages and making them fun again!

Social media can be an effortless way to connect with like-minded people. With a single click, touch, or follow, you are instantly engaged with a person or topic that interests you and hundreds to thousands of other individuals. This incredible reach is like nothing we have experienced before. It has connected people, created communities, and launched movements on its many platforms. Social media creation and consumption should be a JOYFUL practice in your life and business. So how can we accomplish that?

First of all, you need to understand that social media operates using algorithms.

Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter operate their newsfeeds on algorithms that sort posts based on relevancy instead of publish time.

This means that those networks can prioritize which content a user sees in their feed first based on the likelihood that they’ll actually want to see it.

The more engagement a post gets, the more likely it is to be rewarded by the algorithm. So, you might see posts from your closest friends and family consistently because those are the accounts you interact with most often. These algorithms are constantly evolving to provide the best user experience possible; as a result, marketers (like MKM!) have to consistently adapt to them by experimenting with content and changing up our marketing strategies.

Try unplugging for a day and see how much better it makes you feel.

So how can you tune your Newsfeed algorithms to show you the content and posts that fill you with joy, rather than bring you down?

Try a few of these practices:

  • Unfollow accounts that bring your vibe down and declutter your inbox to filter through the promotional emails and junk
  • Engage with posts that make you smile through commenting, not just reacting. Follow posts and accounts that interest you or are beneficial to your community (small town pages, local businesses, organizations).
  • Share with your followers a link to a podcast, book, recipe, article that you think will be insightful for others.
  • Unplug. Delete your social media apps for the day and resist the urge to log in from your laptop. See how good it feels to go off the grid for 24 hours.
