7 (More) Hard Truths You Need to Hear About Business

Of course there are hard truths that make business ownership difficult and may complicate your life, but there are some other hard truths you must acknowledge too…

Today, I’m here to share 7 additional hard truths I’ve learned about running a business in the 7+ years I’ve owned and operated Molly Knuth Media. If you didn’t listen to part 1, then click here to check out last week’s episode.

Entrepreneurship and small business ownership is anything but easy, but I do believe that it is the way of the future. Because especially as women/moms/friends I think we need to know how our unique skills and talents can help us earn money and support our families.

I want you to hear in this episode the silver linings of the hard side of business that I wish someone had shared with me when I started my small biz journey in 2017.

7 (More) Hard Truths You Need to Hear About Business

1: You’ll never want to work a set schedule again. I want to be clear, I have privilege here and it’s not that I’m never working. My work hours just have the ability to flex. The meme, “I gave up working 40 hours/week for someone else to work 70 hours/week for myself” is true. It feels so silly, but it is so good. I think learning how to make your own money is a skill we all should develop, and encourage future generations to develop too.

2: You’ll never want to work for anyone else again. I want to be my own boss forever. It’s the best.

3: You’ll test your courage. Scary conversations. Putting yourself as “open for business.” Taking on debt. Facing failure. Hiring. Letting go. I’s all so much on your shoulders. But you get the opportunity to develop and grow and prove yourself again and again and again. And the next time, it isn’t so scary.

4: You are your own biggest limitation – the sky and the income and the opportunity is yours for the taking. You will convince yourself you’re not capable way before anyone else will. In fact, there are many examples of times in my career when I thought I was just doing something everyone already knew – but that turned out to be one of my gifts and ways I could help others. I can’t tell you how many times I submitted a proposal after I dialed back the proposed payment because I thought “am I really worth that? who would pay that for me?” I held myself back in so many ways. But when I slowed down enough to do the work on myself, developed my confidence, and listened to what others were telling me, I could celebrate and push those limits a little further.

5: You will evolve and change – what you start off doing may not be what you do forever. That’s ok. You get to promote yourself because you are your own boss. Growth and change is necessary.

6: You will be an inspiration to others. When you show up as yourself doing the damn thing, you have no idea how many people you are uplifting and impressing.

7:  You will be forced to celebrate yourself. You are your own HR department. You are your own celebration committee. You are the one who acknowledges your wins and uplevels…And it’s such a boost to your self-confidence. I promise.
